Q: What if project deadlines are my biggest challenge?

Construction. If you're looking for systems more suited to construction site development and clearing material, volume and speed should be considered in relation to a project deadline rather than payload and cycle times in a pit operation.

Q: What should I consider if I'm loading trucks from a stockpile?

Aggregate, Sand and Gravel. If you're moving material from stockpiles to on-highway trucks, features of the loading tool and its ability to dig, dump and return to the pile may have higher priority.

Q: What makes the most sense in a load and carry application?

Load and Carry. Various scraper options such as wheeled tractors and towed scrapers are available. Track-type tractor slot dozing is also a possibility for load and carry. The amount of material to be moved and the capacity of the equipment are the two most critical productivity factors.

Q: What about size of material?

Rigid frame trucks can handle nearly any size materials, while articulated trucks generally top out at a material size of 46 cm or 18 inches. Bed linings are highly recommended for articulated trucks carrying larger material.

Q: Are there liner options for my haul trucks?

o   Liner options are available for almost all bodies, can be recommended based on site preferences and can be made custom per each requirement. Instead of just different thicknesses, we are also doing a lot of different designs and locations, to combat both impact and abrasion zones. 

Q: What about loading machine selection?

The typical selection comparison is wheel loaders versus excavators. Wheel loaders are better suited for well-fragmented materials, smoother floors and multi-face loading among other factors.

Excavators are more ideal for poorly shot materials, poor and unstable underfoot conditions, heavy, wet material and tighter loading areas.

 

Q: Are there common truck recommendations by site grades?

Rigid-frame trucks are best when kept at or below a 10-12% grade and favor longer downhill grades. Articulated trucks can handle grades up to 30-35%.

 


 

Q: How do loading techniques make a difference in my hauling equipment selection?

There are many loading factors to consider. Bench height, drive-through loading techniques, bucket fill factors, single-face versus multi-face loading, dump heights and much more. See your Cat dealer for further analysis of your operation.

Also, take a look at your bucket fill factors as well as truck loading practices. Filling the bucket demands the most power and the most fuel. If buckets aren’t filled to capacity, neither are trucks. Knowing whether it’s an operator technique issue or a bucket mismatched for the system will help you identify your best equipment choices.

Q: How do I determine my best loader/hauler pass match fit?

Aligning any physical dimensions, such as loader lift and dump height and the height of the side of the truck, are important – clearances that are too tight can slow down operators. Bucket fill factors and cycle times are also important in choosing the optimum system.

Common Recommendations:

Wheel loaders: 3-5 passes for a full load is the most efficient pass-match number. A cycle time of 30-38 seconds is a good rule of thumb.

Excavators: 4-6 passes for a full truckload and 18-24 second cycle times for optimum production.
