How can technology help you defeat haul road dust while saving water?

Miners know the importance of watering haul roads to keep dust down. It’s a necessary operation that makes travel safer and keeps machines moving as efficiently and quickly as possible. They also know that it’s not without challenges. Traditional water truck methods combined with overwatering can lead to areas of low traction, which can reduce truck speeds, create safety risks, and shorten tire life. In addition, some sites have limited access to water, a precious resource that needs to be conserved.

By understanding these challenges and gathering customer input, Caterpillar developed an innovative water solution using automation supported by data-driven insights to control dust without overwatering. Cat Water Solutions is more than a water truck. It’s an integrated solution designed with an automated water delivery system, driven by a proven Cat truck platform, connected with advanced technology —providing a more efficient way to manage haul road dust.

The Cat Water Delivery System (WDS) communicates with Cat MineStar™ to send water data and truck information to an online cloud-based application —enabling site managers to know what their fleet is doing, who is operating which machine, and how they are utilizing their time. The Cat WDS software also has an exclusive Auto Mode feature that enables operators to deliver a more efficient watering technique with enhanced precision and control —helping solve issues commonly caused by traditional watering methods.

Now, operators and site supervisors can better understand machine and water utilization to deliver more value and a lower total cost of ownership for the entire operation. Our water truck line up includes the Cat 777 (07), 777 (05), 785D, and 789D—helping you control dust and maintain haul roads around the world. Autonomous watering operation is also available on the 789D truck with Cat MineStar Command. We also offer upgrades, conversions, and retrofit kits for specific Cat truck models already in the field. Ask your local Cat dealer for more information on available offerings in your region.

Why Choose Cat Water Solutions?

Caterpillar offers an integrated system: truck, cab components, software, spray system, and telematics.

The Cat WDS includes factory-integrated cab controls, providing the comfort and ergonomics you expect from Cat machines. This includes a joystick, keypad, and touchscreen to easily control the water delivery system —all within operator reach.

Operators can use the integrated touchscreen to view important data about the water delivery system. Water tank level, spray head selection, and water displacement rate can all be viewed in the high-definition monitor.

The Cat Dealer Network provides parts and services, including data tracking and connectivity support, for your water truck.

The Cat WDS automates water output and spray patterns to help prevent overwatering, using Auto Mode.

This exclusive feature controls and regulates water output and coverage based on ground speed. And the automatic water on/off feature helps eliminate overwatering at road intersections when the water truck comes to a complete stop. Auto Mode delivers a more efficient watering technique with better precision and control compared to traditional watering methods.

Traditional manual watering systems require constant operator input to adjust water spray —and water flow rate is constant until the operator makes an adjustment. This method can lead to overwatering, which can damage haul roads and cause slip events.

Cat WDS is designed to help operators water more efficiently to help keep your site operating at peak performance.

Cat MineStar Technology provides near-real-time information hosted in the cloud to monitor water source and distribution. Use dashboards to track water usage, fuel and water tank levels, asset location, operating mode, and more.

Mine managers can use this data to understand where the truck has been watering, how much water is being used, and determine water plans for the site. Maintaining safer haul roads with better visibility enables your haul trucks and other equipment to meet production targets.

Caterpillar offers a choice between two connectivity options. Cat WDS MineStar Basic uses Equipment Tracking to monitor the water truck and tracks how it is being utilized. Cat WDS MineStar Premium adds Production Recording, helping address sitewide watering needs in conjunction with other water trucks and equipment.

Our automated watering delivery system connected with telematics gives you and your operators the tools to manage water distribution with ease.
