Estimated read time: 2 minutes

Cat® S•O•SSM Services oil analysis helps you stay on top of your equipment’s fluid health. Let’s dive into what this service offers and how it can benefit your overall operation.

Why Analyze Fluids?

Adding fluid analysis to your maintenance plan helps you:

  • Catch early signs of wear
  • Spot oil contamination before it causes damage
  • Avoid costly breakdowns

How Oil Analysis Works

By analyzing fluids, you can detect issues that regular checks might miss. Here’s what you get with Cat® S•O•S fluid analysis:

  • Fast results from Caterpillar’s labs or Cat dealer labs
  • Support from trained scientists, engineers and product experts

Your authorized Cat dealer can help you interpret S•O•S results and build a solid repair plan. If any issues are detected, it’s essential to address them immediately. Proactive maintenance helps prevent equipment failures, reduce repair costs and cut down on downtime.

Extend Oil Drain Intervals Safely

Fluid analysis also opens the door to safely extending your oil drain intervals, which can be a great cost-saver. Depending on your applications and operating conditions, you may not need to change fluids as often as you think. A good starting point is to aim for an interval 1.5 to 2 times longer than your current one.

Here’s how to do it safely:

  • If you currently change oil every 250 hours, aim for 500 hours.
  • Begin by analyzing the fluid at 250 hours, then again at 350 hours.
  • If results remain normal, extend the interval another 100 hours before the next sample.

When you up the interval bit by bit, you can closely monitor fluid health at each step. If analysis ever shows problems, handle those before extending the interval further. Once you reach your target interval, continue to sample the oil every 100 hours to make sure the interval remains safe.

Your Cat dealer is there to help you work safely toward longer intervals while keeping your equipment in top condition.
