In this article, we’ll walk you through how to replace the Cat® hydraulic filter on your equipment. We’re using a Cat 299D3 Compact Track Loader as an example, but the process is pretty similar across other Cat equipment. So grab your tools and your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM), and let’s get started.

Steps for Changing a Cat® Hydraulic Filter

Start by removing the hydraulic tank fill cap to relieve pressure in the system. Open the plug on the filter housing and drain the hydraulic oil into a suitable container for proper disposal.

Loosen the filter housing with a strap wrench. Remove the housing and squeeze the two tabs on the element to unlatch it. Inspect the o-rings for signs of wear or damage. Replace them if they’re damaged to ensure a good seal. Next:

  1. Clean the housing: Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe away any dirt or residue inside the filter housing and the mounting base. Keeping this area clean helps prevent contamination in the system.

  2. Prepare the new filter: Apply a thin coat of clean hydraulic oil to the o-rings on the housing and the new filter. This helps the parts seat properly and ensures a good seal.

  3. Insert the new filter: Install the new filter by inserting it into the housing and making sure the two tabs latch securely.

  4. Reinstall the housing and drain plug: Screw the filter housing back onto the mounting base and reinstall the drain plug.

  5. Refill the hydraulic oil: Refill the system to the correct level with clean, system-appropriate hydraulic oil. Always use oil recommended in your OMM.

Finally, inspect the hydraulic oil fill cap seal for any signs of damage and replace if needed. Always follow local regulations to properly dispose of the used oils and filters.

Once everything is reassembled and the system is refilled, inspect your work to make sure everything is secure and properly installed. If you’re unsure about any part of the process, contact your Cat dealer or refer back to your OMM for guidance.
