Wuhai, in the Inner Mongolia Plateau area of northern China, sits on the banks of the Yellow River on the very edge of the majestic Gobi Desert. Harsh and unforgiving, it is also an area of breathtaking natural beauty.
It’s where you’ll find the Camel Mountain Coal Mine. With its substantial coal reserves, it’s one of the largest coal mines in the world. It is owned by the Inner Mongolia Guangna Coal Industry Group, whose Founder and President, Wang Cairong, came to the area over 20 years ago. It is also the first recognized ‘green mine’ in Inner Mongolia on China’s National Green Mines list.
Despite an abundance of high-quality coal, extracting it isn’t easy. The seams are tightly entwined within hard rock. And weather conditions are brutal, with the summer months blowing 30°C (85°F) sandstorms and the temperature dropping to -20°C (-4°F) in winter.
“In the unique terrain of Wuhai, we faced a daunting challenge,” Cairong explains. “To tackle this, we needed excavators capable of high quality and productivity. The rocks caused significant wear and tear to the excavators and timely service was essential.”
After years of testing different brands, the mine now stands by Cat® machines. Once modified with the addition of Severe Duty (SD) buckets, Double Tooth Track and Full Chain Protection, their unmatched toughness and agility are more than a match for Wuhai’s brutal conditions.
Cairong has grown to love this land she now calls her second home and wanted to give back to the land. “I had a special desire to create a green landscape and enhance the mining environment,” she said.
Given the exceptionally dry climate, this was not a small challenge. Her first attempt at irrigating the land saw only a 5% survival rate for seedlings, but she was not deterred.
The solution was to use her Cat fleet to compact the slag heaps to create slopes of 33 degrees, the angle at which moisture would be retained. Her team then added a 50 cm layer of fertile topsoil, creating space for plant roots to grow. Drought-resistant plants were planted and watered by drip and spray irrigation systems.
Today, these hills are flourishing, covered in vegetation and attracting wildlife back to the area after many years.
For Cairong, this is just the beginning, and plans are in place to make the land more fertile, fuller in plant life and richer in fauna. But for now, whenever she returns to her second home, she’s filled with pride and a sense of accomplishment knowing the changes her company is making now will be around for a very long time.
