Gas compression operators running Cat® G3600 A3 Gen 1 engines can now lower their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including methane emissions, with a cost-effective upgrade as part of a scheduled overhaul. Installing the G3600 A3 Gen 2 upgrade is a simple choice that not only supports climate-related objectives but also maximizes an operator’s investment in their existing assets. With the G3600 A3 Gen 2 engine upgrade, operators can enhance their operations with several important benefits while maintaining their existing engine platform.
As today’s gas compression operators are focused on regulatory requirements that carry associated fees, the ability to quickly and easily modernize existing G3600 A3 engines is welcome news. The upgrade can help operators achieve1:
Additionally, the upgrade is cost-neutral when performed during a scheduled major overhaul. Even if the upgrade is conducted as part of an unscheduled overhaul, the investment is still much lower than the estimated waste emissions charge for methane under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.2
The A3 Gen 2 engine upgrade includes components for the pistons, rings, cylinder liners, pre-chambers, and software that are equipped with the latest enhancements. Operating the upgraded engine is seamless for crews as equipment practices, preventative maintenance and overhaul service intervals remain unchanged.
Lab testing also indicates that operators can potentially reduce their aftertreatment costs due to longer oxidation catalyst life. As the A3 Gen 2 upgrade reduces emissions, it may prolong the time span for those emissions to hit the applicable limits for the same catalyst.
The A3 Gen 2 upgrade kit is field proven with more than 50,000 operating hours, so operators can have confidence that their upgraded engines will continue to deliver the performance and reliability they expect from the G3600 A3. The upgraded engine has also been tested in a variety of site and fuel conditions, ensuring high performance even in challenging environments.
The A3 Gen 2 upgrade kit is also compatible with older Cat G3600 ESS engine models that have been converted to A3 specifications. This wide range of backward compatibility marks a significant opportunity for operators to upgrade older equipment to the current standards.

Gas compression operations are an essential part of the production process, ensuring pressurized gas can be moved through pipelines for use in our communities, commercial stations and beyond. Downtime is not an option. With the introduction of the Cat® G3600 in 1991, Caterpillar delivered an engine with the power needed to support increased gas production while providing the operation and maintenance ease that operators demand.
Learn MoreAs gas compression operators face evolving requirements and operational needs, valuable engineering updates are available for existing Cat® engines of any age. The Cat G3600 A4 Gen 2 upgrade kit helps modernize A4 Gen 1 engines (Cat G3600s manufactured from 2015-2023) by not only lowering methane and other emissions but also offering the flexibility to increase power compared to the previous model.
