Cat® Front Cab Guard Installation Guide

Estimated read time: 2 minutes

Upgrading your cab with a Cat® front guard can help protect against debris on demanding jobsites. You can install Cat upgrade kits yourself. They are compatible with many machines, including older models. Here’s how to install a front cab guard on a Cat 317 Hydraulic Excavator. While the process is similar for other machines, consult your Cat dealer for specific instructions.

Before starting, move your machine to a dry, level surface. Lower the implements to the ground, lock out the hydraulics, and turn off the engine. Always consult your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM) for specific safety guidelines, and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

1. Remove Light Assemblies

Begin by removing any installed light assemblies, as the bolt holes for the lights will be used to mount the guard.

2. Install Support Pieces and Brackets

Attach the support pieces to the upper corners of the window and the brackets to the lower corners. Tighten the bolts on the side of the brackets for a secure fit.

3. Install Latch Handle and Gas Springs

  • Screw the knobs onto the latch handle for easy operation.

  • Attach the top of the gas springs to the hole near the center of the window. The bottom of the springs will be connected to the guard once it’s installed.

4. Attach Stoppers, Tighten Brackets

Install the stoppers on the inside of both brackets and finish tightening the brackets.

5. Lift and Secure Guard

Use appropriate lifting equipment to raise the guard into position. Rest it on the support mechanism at the top of the cab.

Insert the shaft through the guard’s top mechanism and secure it with a locknut and washer. Attach the bottom of the gas springs to the guard and fully lock the guard in place.

6. Test Latch Lever

While tightening the guard, test the latch lever by pushing it down to ensure it locks and operates correctly.

Finally, reinstall the light assemblies in front of the newly mounted guard.
