Save Time And Money On Marine Repairs With Cat Reman

Does your vessel operate under Marine Classification Society (MCS) standards? If so, maybe you’ve avoided using certain remanufactured parts due to traceability issues. Here’s the good news: Now you can take advantage of Cat® Reman’s time- and money-saving benefits with cylinder packs, short blocks and long blocks that are MCS-compliant.

  1. Like-new performance of parts that are compliant with MCS regulations
  2. Fraction-of-new cost with core return1
  3. Less labor and downtime with drop-in-ready solutions
  4. Peace of mind with a same-as-new, 12-month Caterpillar Limited Warranty2

New Identity? No Problem.

The Cat Reman portfolio consists of more than 8,000 different part numbers, ranging from engines to components to kits. That includes hundreds of marine engine parts compatible with Cat propulsion and auxiliary engines. These power everything from personal yachts to commercial tug and salvage, inland waterway and offshore vessels.

That said, if you operate an MCS-classed vessel and you need to replace engine cylinder packs, short blocks or long blocks, choosing traditional remanufactured parts may present a problem: traceability.

“As part of the Cat Reman process, all viable cores that are returned get disassembled and lose their original identities,” says Tim Eirich, a Cat Reman senior account manager with a background in the marine industry. “That means it also loses the serial numbers and heat codes that can trace it back to the forger. MCS requires that traceability, so you can easily perform root cause analysis if there’s a problem.”

To overcome that challenge, we’ve introduced Cat Reman overhaul repair options that feature a 100%-new crankshaft and 100%-new connecting rods. They not only deliver the time and cost savings you expect from Cat Reman parts — they also include the required identification information you need to comply with MCS rules.

Three Marine-Specific, MCS-Compliant Solutions

Rebuilding your Cat engine? Cat Reman marine cylinder packs offer a simple solution, with everything you need in one order and no on-site assembly required. Each pack includes the cylinder liner, piston, rings, wrist pin and retainers — plus 100% new connecting rods that provide traceability — already preassembled. This built-in convenience helps reduce extra labor time and cost.

“On an offshore crew vessel, you could have four engines, which equates to 48 cylinder packs, and usually they’re all overhauled at once,” Eirich says. “Tearing apart 48 cylinder packs to replace the connecting rods with traceable ones can be a lot of work. Cat Reman options are drop-in solutions, which also offer like-new performance and a same-as-new Caterpillar Limited Warranty.”2

For major overhauls made easy, Cat Reman marine short blocks and long blocks keep your vessel powered for the next lifecycle:

  • Short blocks — available for C18, C32, 3412 and 3412E engines — include a pre-mounted cylinder block and pistons along with a 100%-new crankshaft and connecting rods for traceability. They’re ideal for major overhauls without the need to repower with a new engine.

  • Long blocks — available for C18, C32, 3412 and 3412E engines — contain everything in the short-block package plus a cylinder head, camshaft and timing gears. (Depending on your engine model, they may also include an oil cooler, oil pump, water pump and other components.) Consider upgrading to this option when additional components, like your front gear train and housing or camshaft, don’t meet Caterpillar performance specifications.

  • Component certificates for new connecting rods and crankshafts can be obtained from the following societies: American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV), Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Lloyd’s Register (LR). Your Cat dealer can help you obtain the Marine Society Certificates for your vessel.

“Reducing total vessel downtime is the name of the game. With these short blocks, long blocks and cylinder packs, installation can be done onboard, which helps reduce technician labor and overall vessel downtime.”

— Tim Eirich, Senior Account Manager, Cat Reman

Convenience At A Lower Total Cost Of Ownership

Compared to purchasing a replacement engine, Cat Reman marine-specific cylinder packs, short blocks and long blocks can help reduce repair time and total cost of ownership. And because they’re genuine Cat parts, they will fit seamlessly and work alongside your existing Cat components. Like all Cat Reman parts, they deliver:

  • Like-new performance: Cat Reman marine engine parts are remanufactured to original OEM performance specifications, incorporate critical engineering updates and are tested to perform like new.

  • Cost savings: The price of Cat Reman marine components is a fraction of the cost of new parts when you return your core (used component).1

  • Drop-in availability: No matter where your vessel takes you, you’ll find Cat Reman options readily available at authorized Cat dealer locations around the world — as well as on parts.cat.com — to help reduce labor and downtime.

  • Warranty coverage: All Cat Reman products are backed by a same-as-new, 12-month Caterpillar Limited Warranty.2

“You’re not going to get fewer engine hours or less engine life because you’re using Cat Reman parts,” Eirich says. “The product will perform like new because it is remanufactured to like-new specifications.”

Simple Core Returns That Support A Circular Economy

Another advantage of choosing Cat Reman marine engine parts? They help support a circular economy.

Core return is the lifeblood of the Cat Reman process, providing the material required for remanufactured parts. When you return end-of-life components that meet the core acceptance criteria to a Cat dealer, you not only get your core deposit refund from your Cat Reman purchase — you help us bring new life to old metal. Through the remanufacturing process, we use less greenhouse gas process emissions, less new materials used, by weight, and less process energy than the manufacture of new parts.3

To determine the acceptance and usability of returned core, all Cat Reman parts have documented core acceptance criteria.4 Ask your dealer about the specific requirements for marine cylinder packs, short blocks and long blocks. Typically, you can receive a full refund for cores that:

  • Are fully assembled and complete
  • Are not visibly cracked, broken or welded
  • Display no non-operational damage, like mishandling, excessive rust, corrosion, pitting or fire damage
  • Have an acceptable Cat part number

Whether you’re planning an overhaul or responding to an unplanned repair, Cat Reman has you covered with marine engine parts that can save you time, money and labor — all while making sure you stay compliant with MCS requirements.

“Our focus is developing repair options that include everything from component piece parts to cylinder pack and cylinder head assemblies to overhaul repair options such as short and long blocks.”
