When Hurricanes Ravaged North Carolina, Caterpillar Helped Rebuild the Community

Every year, the Atlantic hurricane season impacts U.S. states along the Gulf Coast, East Coast, and mid-Atlantic. In 2024, North Carolina was hit by record-breaking storms, including Hurricane Helene. The community of Vilas was especially impacted by a devastating landslide—the largest the state had ever seen.

Watauga County resident Roger Townsend recalled the moment he saw the wave of debris rushing toward his home.

“Down this holler came a 50-foot-high, 300-foot-wide wall of rocks, trees, stumps, and mud. I said, ‘Lord, take care of me.’ And by the time that little prayer was done, this stuff was in my backyard at my feet. That's how fast it happened.”

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Vilas homeowners were left with an unimaginable amount of clean up and repairs, from downed power lines and internet outages to flooding and washed-out roads. That’s where the teams at Gregory Poole, the local Cat® dealership, and Caterpillar’s Cat Command product team stepped in to help with this massive earth-moving project.

“When I heard about the hurricane and knew the kind of disaster we were encountering, the first thing that came to my mind was to keep people safe,” said Greg Meckes, Technology Specialist at Gregory Poole. “Landslides like we're encountering here today are the perfect example of where Cat Command comes into play.”

When working in landslide clean up, there is always the risk that the material could start to slide once more. With Cat Command, operators can remotely control their machines from a safe operating station, ensuring they remain out of harm’s way while working. They can also utilize line-of-sight consoles for added convenience.

“In the past, it's always been safety at the expense of productivity. Cat Command has a unique ability to do both right and we can quickly recover from this natural disaster and still be safe,” Alan Pumklin, Cat Command Specialist at Caterpillar, explained. “It has all the built-in safety and built-in automation features that make operating that much more efficient.”

The Gregory Poole and Cat Command teams recognized that they were in a unique situation to help and came together to offer aid to a community in need. As Meckes said, “that is giving back in its true form.”
