Kerala was the first state in India to report a case of Covid-19. The government sprang into action to control the disease with numbers jumping each day. Kasargod, one of the key cities in Kerala was among the worst hit.
Taking stock of the situation, the Tata Group initiated efforts to ease the Covid situation by building a hospital with a planned 540 isolation beds and quarantine zones for 450 patients. Quick progress was made with the support of the government and permits were cleared in record times for construction.
However, cases were surging and time was running out. The hospital had to be up-and-running at the earliest possible time. The Construction Equipment Owners Association (CEOA) was roped in for land preparation and levelling. A majority of the association members were happy owners of Cat equipment. And all Cat machines were tasked to do the work.
Construction in Kerala has always been hard with difficult hilly terrain, unstable soil conditions and non-stop rains. Luckily, this time the operators faced no such challenges. The Cat machine operators started doing what they did best – operating Cat machines for earth moving. Despite the national lock down and multiple shifts a day, the operators and owners persevered and completed the work before time.
Mr.Abdul Nasar, President of CEOA & a product customer of Gmmco Cat said, “The work proposal request came for completing the earthwork operations in 14 days. We took 10 days. We don’t just build our country, we save lives now”
